Mariner's Compass Quilts, New Directions
Back Cover Information In her second book on Mariner's Compass
quilts, Judy shares even more stunning examples and projects based on this very
popular quilt pattern. The images are inspired by sixteenth century cartographer's
colorful compass roses designed for early sailing charts. Judy gives 11 full-size
patterns for traditional 16 or 32-point compasses as well as designs based on
the sparkling six-spoked wheels of Costa Rican cars and dramatic off-center compasses. Mariner's
Compass and other circular quilts have intrigued Judy Mathieson since 1980. Judy
became interested in quiltmaking in 1973 while completing a BS degree in Home
Economics (Textiles and Clothing) at California State University, Northridge.
She teaches regularly in Los Angeles quilt shops while also lecturing and conducting
workshops in other parts of the United States, in addition to Canada, Japan, Australia,
Scotland, and England. Her work has won numerous prizes at the Houston Quilt Festival,
Quilt National, Visions, NQA, and many other shows. Born in northern California,
Judy has lived in the Los Angeles area with her husband Jack (who drew much of
the original artwork for this book) for over 30 years. They have two sons. Her
previous book, Mariner's Compass: An American Quilt Classic, was published in
1987 by C&T Publishing. " When I think of Mariner's Compass Quilts,
I think of Judy Mathieson-- the two just go together. Judy probably knows more
about Mariner's Compass than any other living quilter You'll love working with
her clear, concise instructions and inspired designs. Enjoy!" --- Marsha
McClosky-- quiltmaker, teacher, author "What a fine sequel to Judy's
first Mariner's Compass book! The drafting and design sections are stimulating,
comprehensive, and easily understood. The addition of foundation piecing makes
this intricate pattern more accessible and more precise than ever before."---Jane
Hall--co-author of Precision Pieced Quilts Using the Foundation Method. Table
