Back Cover Information

Burgoyne Surrounded - New Quilts from an Old Favorite includes:

  • The popular New Quilts from an Old Favorite contest, sponsored annually by The National Quilt Museum of Paducah, Kentucky, has once again brought out the best efforts of the contestants.
  • The top winners and semi-finalists describe their inspiration and the design of their quilts, each an original variation on the classic Burgoyne Surrounded block.
  • Photographs and information about the museum itself enhance this annual favorite, now in its 15th year!

From the Editor

While preservation of the past is one of a museum's primary functions, its greatest service is performed as it links the past to the present and to the future. With that intention, The National Quilt Museum sponsors an annual contest and exhibit called New Quilts from an Old Favorite.

Created to acknowledge our quiltmaking heritage and to recognize innovation, creativity and excellence, the contest challenges today's quiltmakers to interpret a single traditional quilt block in a work of their own design.

Burgoyne Surrounded: New Quilts from an Old Favorite is a wonderful collection of these interpretations. You will find a brief description of the 2009 contest, followed by a presentation of the five award winners and 13 finalists and their quilts.

Our wish is that Burgoyne Surrounded: New Quilts from an Old Favorite will further our quiltmaking heritage as new quilts based on the Burgoyne Surrounded block are inspired by the outstanding quilts in this book.
