Make a Really Fabulous Tee Shirt Quilt

I began quilting in the early seventies and started teaching twenty years later. One of my earliest classes was on how to make keepsake quilts, those lovely, unique works that document the maker's recollections of people, places and events. As the class met week after week, I taught several different techniques, including how to transfer photos onto fabric for sewing into a quilt.

One day I realized that there was a trove of ready-made motifs available for the taking - those on tee shirts. After all, most tee shirts are specifically designed to help a person recall a special place or event. We can apply the same ideas from our beautiful keepsake quilts to making fabulous tee shirt quilts.

Often a tee shirt quilt takes on a particular theme - of sports, a special vacation or travel experience, a school activity or interest or a hobby. Making a tee shirt quilt provides a legitimate reason, plus a method, for editing and pruning an over-abundant tee shirt collection.

Because these quilts are so attractive and so meaningful to the people you make them for, I believe that once you leave the basic principles and techniques, you will make a fabulous tee shirt quilt whenever you have a little window of time.

About the Author

Caryl Schuetz is interested in every aspect of quilting, from history of the art form to the latest in technology for making them. She participates in virtually all venues open to avid quilt enthusiasts, teaching, appraising, lecturing, showing her own work (and garnering awards), and contributing to numerous books, magazines and calendars. She is also a professional quilt photographer. Caryl belongs to a number of quilt organizations, both local and national and is an American Quilter's Society Certified Quilted Textiles Appraiser. This is her first book.
