IntroductionWhen we were thinking of locations for our next book we wanted a place with bags of colour and atmosphere, that was south of wintry England. A great friend of mine had bought and restored a 16th century tower with a walled garden on the Mediterranean island of Malta. It turned out to be the ideal choice. The walled garden was a haven which supplied us with settings for several of our shots. The orange trees. Bougainvillea and cacti combined with warm Maltese stone brought out the richness of the quilts. Then we found old farmhouses, boats and wonderfully painted houses to add to the atmosphere. Our aim was to echo or contrast with each quilt's colours to magnify the multi tones of them. I hope you agree that the old, distressed paint surfaces we discovered and the rich, weathered stone served as handsome settings for our book.
