Quilt & embellishment books

Like her quilts, M. Joan Lintault's book is rich, dense, allusive and full of fascinating details about the intersections of nature and art and the process by which art is made. Her book will not teach you how to make a quilt or copy her work, but rather how an artist thinks and works and how you might become one.

Back Cover Information

Internationally renowned quilt artist M. Joan Lintault shares the philosophies and techniques she uses to create amazing art quilts. Involved in the fiber arts movement since 1965, Lintault's work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution, the American Crafts Museum and the American Museum of Quilts and Textiles. This book is her latest artistic accomplishment—dedicating in print the deeply personal and elusive inner workings of the artist's mind.

Quilters and art lovers alike will be awed and inspired by the amazing quilts featured throughout the book. With her hand-dyed fabrics, layering techniques, negative space and freeform outlines, Lintault pushes the envelope of quilt making. Readers will have valuable insights into her artistic process. Striving to have quilts recognized as serious art, Lintault employs her knowledge of "the language of art" in her creations.

While Lintault does explain some of her technical processes in the book—it is less a "how-to" book as a "get yourself going" book. Robert Shaw, quilt expert and author of The Art Quilt, raves, "I encourage anyone interested in making art to read this marvelous book. I cannot recommend it highly enough."

AuthorM. Joan LintaultAbout the Author

M. Joan Lintault is an internationally renowned quilter who is one of among a handful of the original art quilters. She has been involved in the Fibers movement and has been exhibiting her work since 1965. In his book "The Art Quilt", Robert Shaw called her" ... one of the most consistent and original of all contemporary quilt makers."

The work of Ms. Lintault has been exhibited at such places as The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution. The American Crafts Museum, The American Museum of Quilts and Textiles and the Museum of American Crafts. She has shown her work in over 300 exhibitions.

Born in New York City, Ms. Lintault graduated from The State University of New York at New Paltz in 1960, with a BS degree in Art Education. She has also earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Ceramics from Southern Illinois University 1962.

From 1963-1965, Ms. Lintault worked in the Peace Corps in Quinua and Ayacucho, Peru in crafts development where she assisted weavers, knitters and dyers to improve quality of their work, introduced fast dyes and set up a crafts cooperative. Subsequently, she taught weaving at the Esquela Artisan de Ayacucho where she designed a four-harness loom, a tapestry loom and built spinning wheels.

In 1978 Ms. Lintault received an Indo-American Fellowship Research Grant for nine months study in India. The project was titled "Textile Co-operatives and Processes of India." She traveled extensively in India in order to observe traditional textile processes. She was also able to observe the function and operation of textile co-operatives and their effects on the craftspeople in the village life of India.

In 1984-1985 Ms. Lintault received a Fulbright Research Grant for nine months study in Kyoto, Japan. The grant was titled "The Japanese Art of Kusaki-zome (grass and tree dyes)".

She has taught and lectured on various surface design techniques throughout the USA, Japan, India, China and Malaysia.

After teaching textile design at the University level for 27 years, Ms. Lintault is currently living and working in New York State.
