About the DesignsThe source of ideas for this book mainly comes from textiles. I have always loved plants and textiles, so this happened quite naturally. I explored French Provencal fabrics, with their delicate, near-folk art depiction of Mediterranean plants, 18th century chintz and silk embroidery, Indian and Persian textiles, Art Deco and 1930s furnishing fabrics. The jewel-like precision of medieval illuminated manuscripts also inspired some of the designs. Other illustrations were simply developed by studying the flowers themselves - those in my garden and in the countryside and those I have painted from all over the world.
