About the Author

While attending a Kansas City quilt show in the early 1990's, I found reprints of the Ladies Art Company (LAC) catalogs and patterns at one of the vendor booths. "This is interesting" I thought to myself. Somehow I hadn't realized that St. Louis, Missouri was a focal point for quilt pattern businesses in the first half of the 20th century. That single thought changed the whole direction of my life.

Ladies' Art Company first advertised the sale of quilt block patterns in a Hearth and Home, October 1895 ad. The quilt pattern was offered as a premium if you bought 3 lots of Silk, Satin and Plush packages.

There were 272 LAC blocks advertised in the Good Literature, December 1895 magazine. The first magazine advertisements do not mention that Ladies' Art Company had produced a catalog of 272 quilt pattern blocks. Rather, the Good Literature, December 1895, ad states "Quilt Patterns, 10c each, 3 for 25c, 7 for 50c, 272 to select from.

In November 1896, in The People's Home Journal ad, page 18, the Ladies Art Company advertised "Catalogue, Crazy Stitches and list of 400 quilts."
