Introduction
The handling of fabrics has enormous appeal and throughout history artifacts have been lovingly crafted using local materials and incorporating cultural symbolism. Inventiveness and resourcefulness were essential qualities if people were to make the most of the limited materials available. We can take great inspiration from a wonderful worldwide legacy of richly stitched textiles in a vast array of precious and non-precious materials.
Sometimes quite humble fabrics have been used to create the most seductive cloths. We are not limited in our choice of materials and there are so many products on the market that it can be difficult to know which ones are the most useful. The creation of seductive surfaces offers us the opportunity to explore a range of the most versatile products within the context of experimental samples and developed imagery.
According to the dictionary, the word seductive can mean alluring, attractive or tempting and it is undoubtedly true that many textiles would satisfy this description. There are numerous seductive products on the market and they can provide an irresistible temptation but unless used appropriately become merely gimmicks
Textiles tantalize but exhibition organizers normally discourage touching as excessive handling could damage the works. Occasionally handling pieces are provided to give the visitor an idea of the feel and quality of the surface....
With such a vast array of fabrics, materials and techniques at our disposal we will explore the nature of seductive surfaces and attack them with focus and commitment. We hop that you will be encouraged to explore and develop them within the context of your own style.
