About the Contributors Karla Alexander has been making quilts in
a traditional style for cribs and family beds since she was a young girl. More
recently, however, she began exploring the possibilities of quiltmaking and developing
her own style and methods. Today she self-publishes a diverse line of quilt patterns
through her company, Saginaw Street Quilt Company. And she is the author of books,
including Stack the Deck! (Martingale & Company, 2002) and her most recent
publication, New Cuts for New Quilts (2006), also published by Martingale &
Company. A significant part of Karla's life is spent teaching others to
embrace the world of quiltmaking. Her books and teaching style encourage visual
play—endless variations of arrangements without preconceived notions of the
end result. She sees her designs simply as the starting point for another quiltmaker's
inspiration. Maaike Bakker, who is from the Netherlands, made her first
quilt in 1978 as a wedding gift for friends. In 1993, during a trip to the United
States, she became enthusiastic about foundation piecing. She published her first
quilting book in Dutch and has also published a book in German. Maaike has written
three books with Martingale & Company, including Strip-Pieced Quilts (2005)
and Spellbinding Quilts (2006). Today Maaike lives and works in a little
village in the north of the Netherlands. She designs her quilts and writes books
and articles in her old farmhouse studio. She also teaches patchwork techniques,
and her quilts have been exhibited in the Netherlands, Germany and the United
States. Maaike and her husband, Theo, have three children.
