Why Use a Serger?

A serger is a type of sewing machine designed for overcasting: for example, to finish edges and seams. But today's models can expertly perform many more functions quickly and easily. Creative Serging will help you to move beyond the basics by showing you how to make the most of all the great features, stitches and techniques you can accomplish using this remarkable machine.

About the Authors

Fiber artist, author and tutor, Anne van der Kley teaches at the International Husqvarna Viking convention and the Janome Institute, and presents original projects at Bernina University, the American Stitches Expo and the Original Sewing and Craft Expo. She is the author of The Art of Creative Overlocking and Serging Australia - Overlocking Artistry.

Anne has sewn since she was a teenager, throughout her nursing career and for her children. Anne's nursing background gives her scope for quirky names to describe what she calls "exploratory" and "developmental" work. She has dubbed herself "The Thread Sergin." Surface embellishment has become her forum. Her signature "Threadfabric" technique and her creations have won her international accolades and prizes, including honorable mention in 2005 and second in 2004 at the Sulky Challenge, and third place from Amazing Designs, all in the Professional Wearable Art category. Anne lives in Sydney, Australia.

Freelance instructor, Bernina educator and author, Nancy Bednar has written The Encyclopedia of Sewing Machine Techniques and Silk Ribbon Machine Embroidery and contributed to Sewing Update, Serging Update, Sew News and the Bernina publication "Through the Needle". She also develops projects for the Bernina Web sites.

Learning how to sew at an early age from an after-school park district class, she has explored all aspects of sewing creativity including garment, home decorating and bridal. Known as the "Serger Queen" at Bernina, she also loves pushing the creative edge on what those machines can do. Nancy loves to teach both consumers and Bernina dealers across the nation, sharing the philosophy of "creativity made easy" to foster and continue the love of sewing in current and future generations.

Nancy lives in La Grange Park, IL with her two children, two dogs and more yards of fabric, threads, sewing books and patterns than she can count.
