What is a Rail Fence Quilt?
A Rail Fence Quilt is probably one of the easiest quilts to make.
Each block is made from three 2" x 5" rectangles sewn together to
make the basic block - one a light value, one a medium value and
one a dark value. When you keep making the blocks and follow the
basic pattern layout to sew the blocks together you create your
quilt top. The pattern moves - there are flows of light and dark
valued fabrics moving diagonally across the quilt. This flow is
to represent an old fashioned type of wooden fence that was made
of three rails that are placed at diagonals to each other. These
fences still exist and you can see from the illustration how it
did inspire the basic pattern.
