About the Author

Gail had been working with dyeing and painting silks for many years before teaching herself to make quilts from the few books that were then available. She then began attending patchwork classes to explore working with different fabrics and techniques. Her first forays into dyeing cotton fabrics were to satisfy her own quiltmaking needs and those of a few friends. Cotton Patch Fabrics was born.

Much to her surprise, suddenly there were not enough hours in the day to both produce the fabrics and sell them. To enable her to concentrate her efforts on dyeing, Gail elected to be a wholesaler, distributing to retail shops throughout Australia.

Gail has worked closely with her fabric supplier to source the best base cloth available. She uses a soft, even weave, Quilters' muslin that stands up to her rigorous dyeing and washing procedures.

Initially Gail started doing the regular dark, medium and light values in various colors and then she introduced a few fat eighths and long quarter packs to add variety to her range. That exercise started with five or six color packs and as demand continued to rise, it became the main part of her work. There are now 22 packs of 10 colors, eight packs of 12 colors, and more than 50 colors, each in dark, medium and light values.

Amongst the packs there is something for everyone: Pastels, Dusty Pastels and Cottage Garden will be the lightest colors you will find. Gail sees the 'hot' colors of Australian summers reflected in Candy Bright, Bold and Bright, Garden, Summer Rainbow and Summer Haze.

Or for something not quite so bright, there are packs called Autumn, Federation, Mellow Rainbow, Shadows, Mellow 1 and Mellow 2. For the Landscape artist, there's Leaf and Litter or Sea and Sky.

Then there is the JUST range, available in pink, purple, blue, green and yellow. And lastly the Just Because pack - just because Gail loved those particular colors together.
