A new collection of 20 projects to suit all skill levels by: Kaffe Fassett, Janet Bolton, Keiko Goke, Roberta Horton, Mary Mashuta, Liza Prior Lucy, Pauline Smith, Betsy Mennesson, Brandon Mably, and Hilde Aanerud Krohg.
This
Rowan Patchwork & Quilting book is styled by Kaffe Fassett and photographed
by Debbie Patterson in the dramatic Pennine landscape of Yorkshire, amongst the
barns and lichen encrusted mossy dry-stone walls that are so characteristic of
the roadside scene in this part of Northern England. In keeping with the northern
feel of this book we have a fascinating feature on the internationally celebrated
textile artist Janet Bolton written by Mary LaTrobe Bateman. To accompany the
article Janet has designed an appliqué panel. "Two Birds in a Sunny
Garden", complete in itself, is open to interpretation. Janet hopes it will
be a starting point for exploration and development of your ideas.
Our other new contributors are Keiko Goke from Japan and Hilde Aanerud Kruhg from Norway. Keiko's brilliantly colored 'scrap' quilt, "Rowan's Baby Blocks", is great fun to make. Three unusual patchwork cat toys complete this story. Hilde has taken Kaffe's Rice Bowls" from his book "Passionate Patchwork" as inspiration for her quilt "En Kopp Te Til Kaffe".
The Rowan Fabric Collection is growing. Kaffe has added sumptuous florals and swirling Beachballs with smaller, useful prints including Leaves, Spools and Paisley Stripe. Alongside the new Kaffe fabrics we have introduced fabric ranges by designers Martha Negley and Carla Miller, as well as The Lille Collection, which are old French fabric designs intensely re-colored. With so many new fabrics you may be spoilt for choice. To help with choosing fabrics, making substitutions or completely changing a color scheme Kaffe and Liza come to the rescue.
With full color photography throughout, every quilt project is accompanied by a 'flat shot', detailed written instructions, and colored piecing diagrams. The patchwork Know How section and glossary found at the back of the book cover all the techniques and terms used for the projects.
About the Author: Born in San Francisco, Kaffe settled in England in 1964 and worked as an artist. On a trip to Scotland he stumbled on an irresistible collection of colored yarns. A few months later he was hooked and proceeded to knit and stitch himself a career. In 1996 Kaffe was asked by the charity Oxfam to visit villages in India to advise on designs that could be marketed in the West.
A wonderful range of striped fabric was the result. After meeting with his close friend and quilter Liza Prior Lucy, in 1996, Kaffe was urged to do a book on her great passion, patchwork. This was the beginning of a new adventure and Kaffe's first patchwork collection "Glorious Patchwork" was published in 1997. Kaffe's second book, "Passionate Patchwork" written with Liza, was published in 2000.
Whilst working on quilts from "Glorious Patchwork" Kaffe designed a range of woven shot cotton and checked fabrics. These were quickly followed by a stunning collection of printed fabrics for the Kaffe Fassett Fabric Collection, all of which are featured in the Rowan Patchwork books, the first of which was published in 1999.
