Author Introduction

I have always loved working with fabric, yarn and stitch. I take pleasure in the tactile and physical qualities that sewing and knitting possess and the endless possibilities they offer me in creating textured artwork.

While I was studying graphic design at art school my Grandmother kindly gave me her precious 1960s sewing machine. I began experimenting with machine embroidery and decided to begin creating illustrations from stitch and textile techniques. For my final exhibition at university I decided to illustrate all the articles in a newspaper supplement using purely textile techniques and I have been working with these techniques ever since.

In this book I show and explain my working process. I combine various techniques in constructing my illustrative pieces including appliqué, hand knitting, hand and machine embroidery, surface embellishment, the use of fabric paints and water-soluble fabric.

This book is intended as an inspirational tool to encourage you to begin creating your own stitched textile work that can be displayed or used in a variety of forms. I hope that you enjoy the pieces in this book and are excited and inspired to begin creating your own stitched textile collages.
