Quilt & embellishment books

Think of the sewing machine needle as a pencil or paintbrush. That is the simple start of thread painting - guiding the thread the way a talented artist guides a paintbrush to literally 'paint' with thread. Leni Levenson Wiener's Thread Painting offers 17 projects, tips for getting the right image onto the fabric and advice on bobbins, thread tension and thread selection.

Back Cover Information

Transform Your Machine's Needle into a Paintbrush

Fabric is your canvas and needles and threads your brushes and paints. Gone are the days of searching endlessly for that 'perfect' fabric with the texture and dimension you are looking for. Unleash your artist within and get perfect results every time!

Throughout the pages of Thread Painting, Leni Levenson Wiener shows you a new and easy way to 'paint' with thread using inkjet-printable fabric or ready-made fabrics to create artwork you can use with any sewing or quilting project.

In addition to a step-by-step guide to thread painting and sketching, you'll enjoy:

  • 17 projects you can make using these simple thread painting techniques
  • Tips for getting the right image onto the fabric without losing subtle color changes and small details
  • Advice on bobbins, thread tension, thread selection and stabilizers

The simple and timesaving techniques make thread painting as easy as painting by numbers or coloring in a coloring book. So add your own innovations and images and make your work uniquely yours!

Author Leni Levenson WienerAbout the Author

Leni Levenson Wiener is a fiber artist and quilt instructor living in New Rochelle, New York. She holds a B.A. in Art History from Simmons College in Boston and a combined MA in Art Restoration/Conservation and Museology from the Universities Internazionale dell'Arts in Florence, Italy.

For many years Leni worked in the garment industry in New York City, designing private label lines for many department stores. She has also worked professionally as a commercial photographer.

In recent years, Leni has enjoyed working exclusively on her fiber art, teaching and lecturing on a variety of quilt techniques and quilt history. Thread Painting was a natural outgrowth of the things she loves - photography, sewing and art quilts.

Her own work is in contemporary art quilts and art clothing; her pieces are in many private collections and in several traveling shows. She prefers to work in a style that combines fabric collage and thread painting.
