Author Heather Mulder PetersonAbout the Author

My introduction to sewing and quilting began at an early age. My mother was always working in her sewing room and I was busy at her side, playing with the beautifully colored buttons and fabric swatches. By the age of five, I had my own sewing machine, and hand-me-down from my great-grandma Anka (after whom my business, Anka's Treasures, is named). By the age of 10 I was making mostly clothes, but I had put together several utilitarian quilts as well.

Nine Patch Posies
Nine Patch Posies

It wasn't until I was 19 that I really started quilting, and a whole new world opened up to me. At that time I was a freshman in college. I was taking my general courses, but the art classes I attended were my favorite. I felt that art might not be a marketable degree for me, though, and I was struggling to figure out my future. After a year of learning the basics of quilting, a small dream started, as I thought of the possibility of turning my favorite hobby into a job. Maybe I had found a way to make my art marketable after all.

I started small, working one job to pay for my schooling and another to fund my new business, all the while going to school full-time. One of the jobs included working at my local quilt shop. This is where I received my foundation in quiltmaking, from learning the basics to running a long-arm quilting machine.

This is also where I taught my first classes and learned that quilters are fun people to work with. Within a year or two, my business was able to support me and I quit my other jobs. Now, years later, I have published several books, numerous single patterns, and designs for quilting magazines and fabric lines.

I had my first inklings about designing when I discovered that I couldn't stick to a pattern. I always ended up making major changes. Then, in an astronomy class in college, we were given a tablet of graph paper for homework assignments. I discovered that most quilts are based on grids, and I spent many hours in that class doodling quilt blocks. By the end of that semester I had a whole tablet full of quilt pattern ideas, and I decided to try publishing a few. To this day, I still design with graph paper and colored pencils, rather than using a computer.

My husband, Joel, and I reside in Spicer, Minnesota. Two years ago we bought a fixer-upper on a lake there, and since then we have spent most of our free time remodeling the house. We have done much of the work ourselves, in the process learning more than we care to know about remodeling! My other hobbies include reading, knitting, kayaking, watching movies and spending time with friends and family.
