Book Information

The unique oriental art form caled "Sumi-e" literally means ink painting or painting done on charcoal ink. Because sumi-e requires only simple materals such as black ink, water and white paper, it has become very popular among artists all over the world.These simple materials, however, can be used to produce an infinite variety of tones on paper specially manufactured for the use of sumi-e artists.

This factor combined with the wide range of strokes available with varied uses of the brush provides the many faceted possibilities in the art of sumi-e. It is the use of a single color of ink to suggest many different shades and the dynamic quality of the strokes that produce the characteristic style of sumi-e. The techniques described here are vary basic, enabling beginners to learn the art of sumi-e with enjoyment and pleasure.
