About the Authors
Both Harriet Hargrave and Sharyn Craig have Home Economics degree with an emphasis in clothing and textiles. They share a love of fabric and its texture and color. They both started sewing at very early ages, progressing from doll clothes, to their own clothes, their families clothes, to home decorations and crafts. Harriet started quilting seriously in 1974, working alongside her mom. Her early quilting career included producing baby quilts for craft shows and teaching adult education classes. In 1980, Harriet opened her quilt shop, Harriet's Treadle Arts. The adult ed. students followed Harriet into her shop and continued investigating the various machine arts in her shop classroom. Her specialty at that time was free motion embroidery, machine arts and machine quilting. In 1982, Harriet attended one of Mary Ellen Hopkins's seminars. Mary Ellen's method of working with patchwork blocks opened a whole new way of thinking for Harriet. This led Harriet into teaching strictly quilting and forgoing the machine arts. Today she is best known as the pioneer of machine quilting and appliqué. Sharyn started quilting in 1978, when she took an adult education class. By 1980, her enthusiasm for making quilts led her into teaching the classes themselves: first one, then two, finally four classes a week, averaging 50 students per class. She taught quilting in the adult ed. system for 11 years. In 1991, Sharyn began to teach internationally. One of her strongest talents is the ability to come up with efficient, organized sewing systems that relate to traditional blocks. She is also known as an inspiring teacher who encourages her student to be creative in their own work. Between the two them have accumulated over 40 years of teaching experience, completed hundreds of quilts, and taught thousands of students.
