Ahhh Yes!

  • Mix sparkling colors.
  • Add eye engaging graphics.
  • Incorporate a thread of interactive educational lessons.
  • Engage the listener by using excellent narrator for the story.
  • Quilt it together with a great moral story.
  • Then add the bonus of being a great teaching tool that incorporates our beloved quilting and color themes with fabulous animation.
  • AND you have a sure fire, first prize WINNER, and a delightful CD that any child (young or old) will love!

This is the first CD in what is promised to be a series; and I hope there will be more to come. Laura Stanton has a true gift of the word with the ability to add great interactive lessons that will hold the attention of young and old alike. Then add to mix the fact that Laura is quite an artist with a real whimsical style that incorporates spiffy animation to make this CD a real pleaser. The 5-9 year old who learns by doing and seeing will be all the richer.

The child in me enjoyed "The Day Patchville Went Splitsville" and the learning activities are a true bonus. For those big kids (adults) who collect children's literature on CD will want to add "The Day Patchville Went Splitville" as one of the CDs in the collection.

"The Day Patchville Went Splitsville" uses engaging words and picture combinations:

Before starting this review, I showed this CD to an after-school care coordinator who was delighted with what she saw. She loved the rhyme and rhythm of the engaging word combinations that Laura used to tell the story and found the color and graphics that accompanied each page quite energizing. She felt the CD would really hold the attention of children because the story narrators bring life to each line and situation. The coordinator felt that her kids would love playing with the interactive color lessons on the CD because they are fun and imaginative animations with good teaching moments incorporated into each activity.

Screen 1 and 2 from the story, note the great use of words and whimsical graphics!

There are 3 ways of learning included on this CD:

1. Conflict resolution story line: The story weaves a thread of quilting and color themes into a story of clashing opinions over what color to use for the new town flag leads to discord and strife, tearing the quilted town apart. Solutions are sought from the wise and elderly quilting grandmother who created Patchville. Silken words of sage wisdom lead to an understanding and acceptance of difference and a new town flag accepted by all. Add in the excellent narrators behind the scenes and the short story holds the attention of anyone who is interacting with the CD while following written word instruction for moving through the screens and listening to each page. (See above for 2 of the screens.)

2. Interactive Color exercises:

Quick, fun lessons introduce mixing primary colors to get secondary colors.

Mystery Doors games reinforce the color lessons by using the primary color keys to unlock and open the correct secondary color door and an engaging animated scene that encourages continuing on to the next set of doors.

Also find 9 nutty Color Puzzlers that use color solutions as the answers.

Then use the paint brush and color in whimsical pictures from Patchville and other themes. When two primary colors are added to the same section, a secondary color fills the area.

3. Print fun outlines from Patchville and other themes. Then color in the REAL world on real paper with crayons, water colors, color pencils, markers, or what ever. Great secondary activity beyond the computer.
