Kaleidoscope Kreator™ 3.0!
Review and Operations

by Sharla Hicks © 2009

Kaleidoscope Kreator 3.0 bring a new faster interface that quickly generates ideas with a simple interface from any scanned photo, bitmap, png, gif or jpg image. Turn photo memories into quilts, pillow, fabric, scrapbook, card images or any thing that can be printed on.

I found the fastest way to get into the groove of how to use the program and see the potential was to watch the Video Tutorials. They are very well produced and the narration is excellent. I even learned an excellent tip on how to print on an already printed piece of paper or expensive Colorfast Printer Fabric making it well worth my time to watch the video.

Program Operations:

1. To open an image onto the Workspace:

  • Use the top menu tool bar & click folder icon.

OR

  • Go to top menu bar and select File

  • Then select Open Image (see below)
  • Browse to an image.
  • Picture formats that can be used:
    • scanned image saved as a:
    • jpg picture file (the less compression the better)
    • gif picture file (more colors gives a higher quality image)
    • bmp picture file (higher quality image)
    • png picture file (higher quality image)
    • downloaded digital photo

Fabric BowlFabric Bowl

HINT: If your photo or image file is not saved to your picture folder, use the folder view of Thumbnails (tiny view of images) in the folder.

Select Photo or image

2. Go to top menu bar and select a template from the 55 offered in the Kaleidoscope Kreator 3.0 or select one of the 60 Quilters' Polygon Template.

Select Template

3. When the Template Window opens you have 3 ways to sort when selecting a template style:

Sort Template Shapes MenuSelect Kaleidoscope Shape

  • Blue Templates come in Kaleidoscope Kreator 3.0 (55 total)
  • Pink Templates are the Add-on Quilter's Polygon Templates (60 total)
  • NOTE: The difference between the two is the Polygon Templates all have straight edge polygon cuts conducive to easier piecing when creating quilts. Many have a hole in the center good for adding additional pictures
  • HINT to Quilters: When using a template with irregular edges, a background color can be selected and printed for a square finished block.

4. To open a template choice in the workspace, double click on the Template.

After selecting the image and template:
Move, resize, rotate and view the repetition of the template selection.

HINT: Print your kaleidoscope on colorfast printer fabric so you do not have to piece

HINT: Use your own photographs to avoid copyright issues. Your photograph does not have to be perfect because using the rotate, move and resize tool in Kaleidoscope Kreator allows you to find picture perfect section that can be found in every photo. Above & below are excellent examples of how to use a photo to render a very interesting Kaleidoscope.

Workspace Window & Preview Window

1. Use the Nodes at the corners of the picture to move, resize or rotate the image as needed for composition inside the template.

2. Note the rendered repetition of the template section is shown in the upper right corner

Zoom Tool

3. Click the Zoom Tool to open full sized Preview Window. Look Up

4. Use the Pinwheel Tool to preview additional variations of an image look down within the template boundaries.

Pinwheel Variations
of the image in the SAME location within the template.
NOTE: Best used with templates marked with PAW
and pictures without strong directionality.

5. Use Flip and Rotate tools to Rotate & Flip the image on the Worktable to generate variation when determining composition of Kaleidoscope.

6. To explore further, change the wedge selection, a chunky design can quickly become wonder. (See example below)

Chunky Design needs tweaking
Background Color Selected from Photo is NEW in 3.0
Texture in Background is from NEW 3.0 Feature of Adding Texture to Background Color

Select Wedge Icon to open window full of kaleidoscope shapes

Here I selected a wedge with lacy edge and much thinner shape for MORE pleasing design that
accents the beauty of the door knocker's patina wrist without too much emphasis on the fingers.

If you determine that you need to edit the photo and then want to redesign,
Another useful feature is the ability to document the X & Y Positions, Scale and Rotation of the picture

Quilters who love the stack-n-whack and wedge quilts will love the ability to scan their fabric and experiment with the different variations that are possible before chopping into the fabric.

Below are examples of possible Kaleidoscope Kreator combinations for 1 fabric.

Quilters will find experimenting with the background color can be very useful.
