Review by Sharla Hicks © 2006

I must say I have never reviewed a program that I felt pictures said everything, until NOW.  Wow, the interface is so simple and the result is so spectacular.

Paint by Number 2005 brings to quilters a simple interface that will boost their confidence to create their own pictorial quilt using appliqué, freestyle thread painting, and/or fabric painted & beaded pictorial quilt.

  • Turn any photo or image into a paint by number project in just three easy steps!
  • With a small amount of editing you have the outline for appliqué.
  • Create fabric, thread or fabric painted pictorial quilts of your family, pets, holiday pictures, garden, or your favorite vacation spot with new confidence that the project will turn out well!
  • The possibilities are endless!

Overview

Step-by-Step Icon BarProgram operations

The program has a very simple interface using step-by-step icons that clearly identify the steps needed to move from one operation to the next to complete the task.  The clear concise tutorial (visible on the right hand of screen) answers any questions you may have about each step.

Selecting Rotate, Flip, Size & Using the Crop Tool

Select Size
NOTE:
Quilters can use size selection to create block or quilt section size.

Cropping and generating an enlargement is very helpful to examine details more closely.

Top Navigation Bar
Experiment with the level of detail

Color Detail FineColor DetailColor Detail Lower

There is an option to add an outline around each color division for a stronger definition that will help those who feel they need additional help to define the color areas.

Numbered for paintingColor Mixes
The numbers identify the color (paint or fabric) to be used for each section

The Color Numbers can be deselected to reduce detail even more

Deselect Paint Choices

If the artist or quilter wishes to select a color palette that is different from the photo, using the Print Mode Black & White helps to differentiate values when selecting colors.

Tool bar choices for printout and detail
Black & White ModeGrayscale example

The level of detail choice would depend on the depth of color in the image and the finishing technique (appliqué or embellishing / shading with paint & freehand thread painting.)

Ideas for Appliqué and Freehand Embroidery (Thread Painting) & Fabric Paint/Pen Embellishment

  1. If the project is to be a finished art quilt that incorporates beading, thread and fabric painting, numbering and more detail would be very beneficial.

  2. If the goal is appliqué, less detail and fewer colors would be a better choice to help with creating the appliqué pieces.

    • A quilter wishing to do an appliqué quilt may be required to reduce down the number of lines to the lowest level.

      Top Navigation Bar
NOTE: To generate a lower level of detail slide the Button closer to the low side.

    • Sometimes on a very detail picture with great color depth may require some additional hand/manual editing with paper and pencil to make the appliqué pieces large enough.

    • For appliqué, consider printing on freezer paper using an Ink Jet Print and cutting on the outline. Iron to fabric and rough cut in the 1/4 inch seam allowance.

  3. Another option would be to combine shading with beads, decorative yarns, threads, fabric pens, paints and inks on top of the appliqué for additional detail.

  4. Below is an image with fewer colors that illustrates how quickly an appliqué printout can be generated when the detail is low.
    ColorgrayscaleOutline

  5. Below view an outline for a picture with greater color depth and would require more hand/manual editing for appliqué. This much detail would be a perfect candidate for thread painting and fabric painting with paints, dyes and pens.
